9 Facts about Buddhism

Here are some interesting facts about Buddhism:

1) Buddhists go to temple, not at a special time or day, but when they can.

2) It is commom for Buddhists to go on a full moon day.

3) A Buddhist temple is called Vihara and is a place for education. In a temple, you will find a shrine room with a large Buddha and statues of his disciples. You will also find relics and manuscripts. There is also a lecture room, meditation room and a library.

4) Shoes are removed before entering a temple for respect for Buddha.

5) Buddha is known as a teacher not a god.

6) Candles and incense sticks are lit and Buddhists recite verses in the Vihara.

7) Flowers and food are placed on the front of the Buddhist Statue. The flowers are to remind the person that they will not live forever.

8) The food is given to the Monks since they own nothing of their own and Buddhists feel that giving food will help them reach Nirvana

9) The following principles are said to help Buddhists to act well: 1. Not to hurt living things, 2. Do not take avantage of what is not there, 3. Use senses correctly, 4. Speak kindly, and, 5. Do not take or use drugs or alcohol.

Thanks Hannah and Anna! The reason for why they go on a full moon day is because many Buddhist festivals are on full moon days.

actually,Buddha was born on a full moon day (may,08,563 BCE) so each month there is a day the full moon is present so to thank him and not necessarily celebrate but be happy so there you go the special reason

Melissa, that is one of the most insulting things you could say. If one were to say the same about your religion and ended it with ‘no o-fence’, you would still take offense, wouldn’t you? Maybe it would be best if you stayed away from these sorts of sites. Just a suggestion. Enjoy :)

To all those who want to more Buddhist facts:

-We follow the 8 fold path but monks do much more… Somewhere round 100?

-there are two major sects in Buddhism: Theravada (way of the elders) and mahayana (the great wheel..whatever that means)

-since buddhists cannot get physical during a protest, all they can do is burn themselves to show their contempt…messed up I know…

-Monks shave their heads to show that they have given up earthly beauty to attain enlightenment (some Buddhist don’t need to do that)

-Buddhist sects don’t often disagree with one another because we believe there are different paths to enlightenment

-there are more than 1 buddha, Buddha by definition is someone who is enlightened, there are around 50-100 buddhas or even more

-in Buddhism, we mostly discourage people from giving up their religion to be Buddhist as it is considered a sin to abandon your former religion…unless you’re atheist

-you can attain enlightenment by drinking, which is a sin in Buddhism… There are sages who indulge in those vices and still attain enlightenment, weird I know

That ought to hit the spot, I am theravada Buddhist in Burma, hope this helps : 3

Buddhism has helped me threw my time of need, I lost my mother august 4th 2012 she herself was a roman catholic but she knew I believed in Buddha and never thought anything less of me so when she died and I had to go up an speak that was what I said that no matter how anyone in my family looked at me she always knew I found a religion that expects me and allows me to be at peace, I have a 4 year old son who I am teaching the Buddhism ways as well.
